Callaway Warbird Performance
Distance
The callaway warbird is an excellent distance ball. Its large high energy core with a low spin design give a high launch and long distance. While testing one of our tester tried the ball and was shocked to see an extra 45 yards off the tee in his shot with a moderate swing speed of 89 MPH while using irons.
Many testers got extra yards than their usual balls. The combination of speed, high launch and roll of the ball provides a great advantage of distance even with moderate swing speed.
Spin
Callaway Warbird is a distance focused golf ball and is designed to minimize spin. It doesn't provide much spin on the greens. While reviewing the spin rates of the Callaway Warbird, testers found the spin rate was around 2300-2500 rpm range with drivers. Which is on the lower end for a non-tour ball.
This feature of the ball helps in reducing side spin and promotes a straighter flight. But the more straighter means less control on the ball on approach shots and around the greens.
Compression
Callaway warbird is a high compression ball with a compression of over 90 which makes it a very hard ball. Despite its high compression the warbird is extremely soft from the middle and compresses very easily at impact even with moderate swing speeds.
This large core in addition to the high energy transfer helps in generating faster ball speed and high launch. Many of our testers with moderate swing speed of 80-90 MPH felt no problem while getting it airborne.
Feel
As the construction of the balls says it is a very hard ball. If you are used to premium balls like Titleist pro V1 or soft balls like Callaway Supersoft then this will not satisfy you. The ball is more distance focused and while hitting it gave a hard clicking sound which surprisingly felt quite good. It had a firm, responsive feel when got contacted with the driver.
The ionomer cover also provides less spin and less control then the popular urethane covered balls like Taylormade TP5 and TP5x.
Durability
Callaway warbird, as the construction suggests, is an extremely durable ball. The outer ionomer cover of the ball gives a hard feel but not as hard as a rock.
After two rounds the ball had some scuffs but when we finished the third round the ball got a cut on it as the course on which it was being tested had many bushes. But at some points where we felt the ball would get cut, it shocked us.
PROS
Impressive distance off the tee and with irons
Durable construction
Available in white and yellow colors for visibility
Affordable price point
CONS
Firm feel and clicky sound, especially with wedges and putters
Less greenside spin and control compared to premium balls
May require adjusting yardages as the ball flies further than expected
Callaway Warbird Technology
Core Design
The Callaway warbird is a two piece ball with a large, high energy rubber core which is the main key of the distance the ball provides. When calaway launched the ball the design was made very unique by the engineers of the callaway..
It was made in a way that a high compression ball could compress easily even at a moderate swing speed making the ball give extra yards on the course. The cores large size with the composition promotes a high launch angle for increased accuracy.
Acrodynamics
While doing the callaway warbird golf ball review, callaway's patented hex aerodynamics dimple design helped a lot in reducing drag and optimising launch conditions which proved to be a key for maximum distance.
The flight created by the dimples is very strong and penetrating which slices through the air very efficiently. When the high launch and dimple design combined with the reduced spin it provided a great descent angle for stopping power on approached shots.
Visual Appearance
The Company provides the ball in two colours one is traditional white and other one is yellow, which is extremely helpful while playing golf at night and many golfers suggest that it is the easiest to see. The alignment on the ball is also really good having callaways alignment friendly sidestamp with the arrow. Just put the arrow towards the target and start the round.
Comparison with Titleist Trufeel.
One of the top competitors of Callaway warbird is the Titleist trufeel. A great distance ball in the same price range as Warbird but the Trufeel offers a low compression core which gives it a softer overall feel. The construction of both the balls is 2 pieces.
When we played a round with both balls the Warbird with the help of his large compression core and less spin gave us an extra distance off the tee but the short game of the warbird was not that good as it didn't provide any greenside spin.
On the other hand the Trufeel didn't gave us the extra yards but was great in providing greenside control around the greens in the short game. The overall feel of the trufeel is soft which might not last longer than warbird if not taken proper care.
Overall, the choice is yours. If you look for straighter shots with distance warbird is the best but if you prefer control and feel in a golf ball then Trufeel is a good option.
Who is it for?
The Callaway Warbird is an excellent choice for:
- Golfers with moderate swing speeds (80-95 mph) looking to maximize distance off the tee and with irons
- High handicappers and beginners seeking an affordable, forgiving ball that’s easy to launch
- Players who prioritize distance over feel and spin around the greens
- Those who want a durable ball that can withstand the occasional poor strike
Conclusion
The Callaway Warbird is a great golf ball for the player looking for maximum length and maximum forgiveness, all in an inexpensive package. Its large, high-energy core and low-spin design help shots get up quickly while traveling a long way, and its durable ionomer cover can handle times when a poor contact throws it off track.
While a firm feel without greenside spin could be some players' liabilities, those very same firmness characteristics should be considered strong attributes for the Warbird with moderate swing speeds, trying to squeeze out every yard upon striking off the tee as well as with irons. At an affordable rate and featuring high-visibility color options, the Warbird is the real deal for the average golfer.
